Bonnie 'Prince' Billy :: Cursed Sleep

I truly believe this may be the greatest video I have seen in years. The new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy release, "The Letting Go", cannot come out fast enough. Will Oldham rides again. Video directed by Andy Bruntel.

The Jesus & Mary Chain :: The Reissues

The influence of Glascow's The Jesus & Mary Chain cannot be denied -- their distinct brand of lush, thick feedback and distorted noise can be found on half of the albums you purchased the past decade. But that's not why you should listen to them. While ultimately commercially ignored, the JAMC burned bright on the underground and stayed lit well past the demise of the majority of their peers. Listening to the band is no history lesson in posterity, as the music is as relevant and "contemporary" as anything out in the '00s.
The Jesus & Mary Chain's 1985 breakthrough debut, Psychocandy, set the bar high with it's fuzzed-out white noise, haunting lyrics, and I don't give a fuck attitude. Like some bastard child of The Velvet Underground, Brian Wilson and Bauhaus, Psychocandy would go on to be hailed by many as the band's masterpiece. Just three years ago Sophia Coppola used the album's "Just Like Honey" as as key mood piece for her film Lost In Translation. The reissued Dual Disc comes with a DVD featuring the videos "Just Like Honey," "You Trip Me Up," and "Never Understand."

Following up Psychocandy, the band turned out 1987's Darklands, a surprise to many of their fans accustomed to the controlled rain of feedback that had been the signature sound of the previous LP and singles. Sans distortion, a kinder, gentler JAMC, enlisting a drum machine in lieu of a drummer, evoked even more Velvet's comparisons. While initially confusing, Darklands has aged incredibly well -- in retrospect, Stoned & Dethroned released in 1994 seems like a close cousin to the band's second album. All songs in high resolution 5:1 Stereo, plus videos for "Darklands," "April Skies," and "Happy When It Rains."
Released during the heighth of the "grunge movement," Honey's Dead while a great album, found itself lost among the flannel and goatee crowd dominating the underground music scene of the time. "Teenage Lust" is nasty-good fun. Viideo content includes clips for "Reverence," "Far Gone And Out," and "Almost Gold." The remainder of the band's proper LP catalog is also seeing reissue on Rhino in the Dual Disc format.

Jim Noir :: Tower of Love

Admission: I'm no soccer-jock, so the constant references to one of Noir's tunes being in the World Cup commercial are meaningless to me. But what I do know is that "Eanie Meany" is one of the finest sunshine/pop songs of the Summer. Nothing dark here. Instant pop goodness that sounds as if it could have been a long lost Kinks b-side. Barsuk had apparently been after this album for awhile, and after hearing it I can see why. Cheers. [ release date: Aug 08 2006 ] Noir is presently touring -- dates/details on his website.

Hezekiah Jones :: Says You're A-Ok

An Aquarium Drunkard holds anything released by Charlottesville, VA's Yer Bird Records in high esteem, but this, the label's fourth release, is by far it's strongest. Yer Bird's latest find, Philadelphia based Hezekiah Jones, weaves his musical quilt out of the same soft, acoustic cloth most recently and elegantly spun by the likes of Sam Beam and Will Oldham. While warm and inviting, Hezekiah pokes and stirs up darker lyrical truths adding a textual spoonful of sugar to make his unique brand of medicine go down. Be sure to check out the unreleased track "Put On Your Light" below.

I Don't Want To Go To (Chelsea)

It's been a little over a week and a half now, and I still can't get the sound-memory of Elvis Costello's "I Don't Want To Go To (Chelsea)" (backed and arranged by the masterful Allen Toussaint) out of my head. And that, dear reader, is good thing. The re-worked track I heard live in New Orleans is unfortunately absent from the artist's joint effort, The River In Reverse, so I am having to settle for the original...which itself is nothing to sneeze at. I am reminded of the seething punk influence that graced Costello's early work in it's oh-so-subtle way. Give this old favorite a spin for posterity. And make it loud.

Pavement :: Live at Shepherd's Bush 1997

As a longtime Pavement devotee, the emerging details of the Matador Records Wowee Zowee reissue have me nearly frothing at the mouth. Nearly. In the meantime, a little live nuggett here and there should stave off the anticipation just enough to keep away the night sweats and the speaking in tongues. Feel me?

Some Wowee Zowee reissue details via P'fork: "Wowee Zowee version 2.0 will include around twenty album covers by Steve Keene, a never-before-heard concert from the WZ tour, and a number of previously unreleased tracks and rarities, many of which are alternate takes."

Submarines :: Declare A New State!

L.A. based Submarines are Jack Drag & Blake Hazard and they have a story to tell. It goes something like this: Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy writes songs about a love lost. Girl writes songs about a love lost. Separately. The story could end here, but the twist is that the two are now back together, both romantically and musically. Through the making of Declare A New State! the two were able to reconcile while making the album. Now how's that for a bedtime story?
Unlike many divorce albums, Declare A New State! is not bitter nor depressing. Like reality, it's more introspective and questioning of what happened and how they got there.

Beirut :: Postcards From Italy

Sometimes an artist emerges from the fray whose music winks at you like an old lover. I suspect I am not the only fan of Beirut (Zach Condon) to immediately connect the 19 year old's sound with that of NMH, but you know, shit, I'm saying it too.
The sound: Ah yes, to be sonically swept away to a post Cold War Eastern Europe. Possibly herding goats...you can almost imagine the... Anyway, the album is a fine debut, and one that will continue to hold water throughout the rest of the year, goats be damned. Immigrant indie-rock from New Mexico. Note: Condon and band are working on an as-yet-untitled EP featuring tunes presently in their live rotation

Golden Smog :: Another Fine Day

The more things change the more they stay the same. Somehow it doesn't quite seem like these guys have been putting out albums for over a decade, but time can be fluid and funny like that (moreso than not, yes?).
A side-project for the rootsy Mid-western scenester set of the early '90s. The Smog return here on Another Fine Day, their third Long Player, delivering their least rootsy sounding LP yet. Sounds of the late '60s, early '70s pop-rock waft through the album's core, reminiscent of mid-period Jayhawks albums. Fans of Louris rejoice. Tweedy's appearance comes in on two songs, one of which is a cover of The Kinks "Strangers." Recomendation: It's hot, and it's Summertime. Put this album on, have friends over, open cold beers. Howe Gelb :: 'Sno Angel Like You

Howe Gelb's 'Sno Angel Like You was a traveling gift from an old friend in Atlanta I had the pleasure of catching up with over beers earlier this Summer (thanks, John). While on my "list," I had never committed to purchasing the album. This in turn worked out to be a good thing because 'Sno Angel is a near-perfect road album.
If you don't know the score already, this is the album Gelb enlisted the help from a Canadian Gospel choir to back his off-kilter musical leanings. This odd pairing works amazingly well adding a texture to Gelb's music that sounds more like exaltation than church. Listen below to hear why.

The Whigs :: ATO Record Deal

Now back in Los Angeles, I continually am asked two questions, A) the highlight of the 10 week excursion, and B) what albums got the most play. There are too many experiences to name to begin to answer the first question, but I continually list Athens, GA's The Whigs debut (and self-released) album Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip as one of the most-played LPs of the Summer.

Being so, I was thrilled to hear the news that the band have signed with ATO Records who will soon re-release the band’s debut, Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip, followed by an as-yet-unrecorded second LP for their next release. If you are still unfamiliar with the band, here are a couple of tracks I posted last April.

I have posted twice on The Meters since An Aquarium Drunkard's inception, both were Live shows (that you still can, and should, download below under 'Related Posts'), but this will be the first post on any studio material.
While staying with a some friends in New Orleans, I was reminded of the decidely funky covers the band broke out from time to time in their live shows. What I always dug was that they would take comtemporary pop tunes (for the time) and funk them wayyy up. Kickback is The Meters album for all of us completists, full of nasty, funky covers of rock & roll numbers and extra tunes that just didn't stick on the proper LPs.

Costello/Toussaint :: Live In New Orleans

Shee-it...don't think for a minute the visit to New Orleans was all on a downer tip -- come on now, it is New Orleans, Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler. One the of the highlights was seeing the final show of this Summer's Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint tour in support of their recent collaboration on the album The River In Reverse. The night went down at the House of Blues on Decatur street in the Quarter. A full hot-house digging Costello's take on Toussaint standards and Toussaint's arrangement of the Costello canon. Costello's prolific, and has covered many a genre, but this particularly pairing was right up there with his late Seventies workouts. (Note: I'm not an Elvis die-hard, so this might go against "popular" Costello opinion, I don't know.)

Backed by Costello's band The Imposters, highlights from the show included: Toussaints brass & horn charts on Costello's "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea," and Costello's bluesy rendering of Toussaint's "On Your Way Down." The thematic "Ascension Day" is Toussaint's minor key arrangement of Professor Longhair's "Tipitina" with lyrics penned by Costello. The tune found itself a home both on the album and toward the end of the live set. Oh, and I, along with the rest of the sweating, swaying masses of course loved "Pump It Up." I mean, who doesn't?

Grayson Capps :: New Orleans Waltz

Grayson Capps' album If You Knew My Mind traveled across, and around, the country with me this Summer emanating hot and humid stories from the deep South set in and around Louisiana. Perhaps it was a preview -- a primer -- for the New Orleans I was to travel to, two weeks ago. This, my 13th visit to the Crescent City, while very enjoyable seeing old friends, also carried with it a dazed sadness upon seeing Katrina's wake firsthand. CNN can only prepare someone two-dimensionally. While the French Quarter, the Uptown area, and most of the other tourist-destinations were for the most part spared, the low-lying surrounding areas including the Ninth Ward were hit hard, leaving rubble and ruin in the hurricane's path. Throughout it all, the city and it's steadfast inhabitants haven't lost an ounce of their charm -- not for me anyway.

On to the music. Last week while preparing to cross the country back to Los Angeles I received and email from Hyena Records delivering the first new tune from Grayson Capps forthcoming album, "Wail & Ride" -- due out on September 26th. Not surprisingly, the track speaks of the hurricane's wake and it's effect on both the city and it's denizens. Seeing Capps live in New Orleans is high on my agenda for my next visit.

Alejandro Escovedo :: Exclusive Interview

On Assignment for Live Daily:
Back in late April, on the eve of Escovedo's latest release, I had the opportunity to spend thirty minutes with the artist via phone to discuss among other things: his near-fatal battle with hepatitis, the resulting tribute album that followed, working in the studio with legendary John Cale and much more. Scroll down to download the following MP3 for the complete audio interview.
---------
My thoughts in May for Live Daily per Escovedo's 2006 album "The Boxing Mirror".....

Rolling Stone magazine's David Fricke once proclaimed that "musically, Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre." I couldn't have said it better myself. Escovedo has played it all: punk rock with The Nuns, "cowpunk" with Rank And File and the True Believers, and more recently the role of the Americana troubadour both solo and with his accompanying string orchestra.

2006 finds Escovedo releasing his first studio album in five years. Having fought a serious battle with advanhepatitisitus C beginning in 2002, "The Boxing Mirror" is both an album reflecting on Escovedo's near-death experience, as well as embracing his convalescence and rebirth. It's this duality that draws us, the listener, in. Masterfully produced by The Velvet Underground's John Cale, "The Boxing Mirror" is enveloped in a shroud of immediacy that drives not only the songs but the album as a whole. Here we learn that Alejandro is playing for keeps -- the album is very much in-the-moment. Longtime fans will note the already gripping track from Escovedo's album "Bourbonitus Blues" is re-cut here with even more force, venom, and grit than before.

After the album's final hidden track, we are once again remind that Fricke was right, Alejandro in a genre all his own. It's his game, he owns it, we just watch from the peanut gallery and hope to keep up.

Big Ditch Road (RIYL The Silos, Alejandro Escovedo, Giant Sand)

It's strange for me to post this on An Aquarium Drunkard as it was originally intended for my blog Songs:Illinois. But it was hard to sit and watch this blog go unupdated for more than a week as Justin continues his travels. He'll be back soon with the goodies but for now enjoy the music of Big Ditch.

Why must we compare one band to another? I guess it's the easiest and fastest way to get at a bands core sound. To say a band sounds like the Silos should conjure up a typical lineup of guitar, bass, drums and a semi-gravelly voiced singer espousing heartfelt and sadly romantic lyrics. Big Ditch Road sounds like The Silos. In particualar the lead singer sounds remarkably like The Silos lead singer Walter Salas Humara. So the next question is why do we need to have bands that sound like other bands? And I guess the answer to that one is that sometimes the original band no longer lives up to it's initial appealing sound, after a decade or so songs start to sound the same and themes are all but used up.

Big Ditch Road is like starting anew with the Silos back in 1987. The song "Saint Lonesome" could have come right off The Silos stunning debut record Cuba. Instead it's off the debut by Big Ditch Road called Suicide Note Reader's Companion. Released in the first part of 2006 on the excellent little Minneapolis label
Electone Records, SNRC made a very small splash in a very large pool. The ever expanding ripples from that initial splash have reached me and now you.

Don Chambers & Goat :: Reckless Good

One of the many stops on this summer's cross-country fandango was Athens, GA for the 10th annual Athfest. The last Athfest I attended was 2001, right before the Drive-By Truckers broke -- their performance at the 40 Watt that year was the last time I saw them in that intimate of a setting.
The act that caught my attention this year was Don Chambers & Goat. Surly, rocked up, country-blues nonsense. Fucking great. It's bands like this that keep me seeking out live music whenever I am out of town, on business or otherwise. Lot of talent out there waiting to be soaked up. Anyway, Don is apparently well known in Athens these days, so this post is for the rest of us. Two tracks below: One from the Athfest CD I picked up, and one from WUOG's Live In The Lobby sampler. David Crosby :: 1970 Session Outtakes

One of my favorite LP's from the early '70s is David Crosby's underrated masterpiece "If I Could Only Remember My Name?" A fully realized embodiment of the "sound" of California's folk/rock/country/psychedelia movement of the time, the album features such players as Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell, Phil Lesh, etc., etc. Almost as good as the album (and just, if not more interesting) are these outtakes from the 1970 sessions. These tracks are further proof that Crosby was an artistic force to be reckoned with at his creative peak.

A book that has recently grabbed my attention is Laurel Canyon: : The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood. Chronicaling the state of one of L.A.'s most interesting and famously "arty" neighborhoods, the book excels delving into country-rock and the surrounding scene that developed around it.

Old 97's :: Hit By A Train

old 97's first appearance at SXSW
Have The Old 97's really been around long enough to warrant a greatest hits album? Apparently so. Hit by a Train: The Best of Old 97's wraps up the band's decade long career corralling singles, fan favorites, rare tracks, and the occasional live nugget. While this is a fairly "by the numbers" approach to best-of packaging, it works well for the '97s showcasing the band at their strongest. With Rhett Miller concentrating on his pop-oriented solo career, this retrospective works as both an introduction to the band, and "bookends" the first chapter of the vocalist's career.
