Eskimohunter - Musical Snow Globe Machine

3 days with no updates? Honestly boys! It's JAX again. I couldn't stand the lack of postage so I decided to offer up another great Los Angeles based band: Eskimohunter.

Eskimohunter is the brain-child of the Jason71, a multi-format artist from deep in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The project first began in 2002 and after a few evolutions released an EP, Musical Snow Globe Machine, in Jan. 2005. The album is shoegaze rock in all its epic glory. The project stresses simple layered sound to create its blissful drone. Throw in a dash of pop harmonies, A strong multimedia presence, and you have a truly 71 brand of music.

The band is currently revamping it's lineup by adding Jenni Tarma on bass (JUNIOR / SENIOR, HAR MAR SUPERSTAR), John Riccardi on guitar & Christian McCall on drums. Rehearsals are underway for upcoming performances around Los Angeles.

... your host somewhere in america
Greetings from one of my favorite Southwestern towns, Santa Fe, NM. Been on the road one week now and having a good old time. This Summer, while away from Los Angeles, I am doing my two-hour Little Radio show remotely so the Aquarium Drunkard podcasts will be those shows available here in Podcast format. No dialogue on this one, but that will change once I am somewhere for more than a couple of days and have time to fool with the mic.
I think you will really enjoy this show -- had lot of fun putting this one together. It starts off with The Doors "Changeling" as I (somewhat ironically) got on an L.A. Woman kick my last few weeks in town. No one did the underbelly of Los Angeles like Morrison did. Enjoy, and check back next week for a new episode (or you can always listen to it live every Wednesday 2-4 p.m. PST on LittleRadio.com).
Cheers - A.D.

WWdBD?

Filling in for the wandering Justin today will be Will from Be the Boy. Today, Will takes a break from his usual writings about robots, cartoon mascots and slip and slides to talk about salvation through music.

Sometimes I stand on busy street corners with a portable amp and microphone trying to get the attention of passersby. As they walk by I call out”

“Can I have a moment of your time to tell you about my savior...”

“Do you want to find salvation in....”

“Have you accepted... “

I rarely get to finish a sentence, most people keep walking and ignore me and some people throw things. For those curious few who do stop, I hand them a picture and ask them if they are willing to accept d. Boon into their lives.

If you’re a reader of the Aquarium Drunk then you likely know about d. Boon but just in case here’s the facts. d. Boon was the singer, guitar player and primary songwriter for The Minutemen, San Pedro’s greatest gift to the world. d. Boon spoke truth to power through rock and roll but left the world too soon.

The Minutemen did their best work during a time when the US government gave up on the needs of the many to focus on the desire of the wealthy. When d. Boon was still alive he wrote and spoke about the arrogance and corruption of those in power and then gave that message to the people to carry forward. I like to think that his words had an effect on punk rock kids across the nation who grew up into voters. Today, in the US we are living under a government that is so transparently corrupt and unconcerned with the future that it hardly even feels necessary to point it out anymore. When I read the news and feel (invariably) angry I ask myself “What Would d. Boon Do?” He would not let this stand unchallenged and neither do I, but I am only one man. This is why I spread the gospel of the Minutemen and hope that somewhere there’s a kid in his basement learning the guitar who feels the same way. We need a man with a guitar in his hand willing to speak the truth to the masses.

Anders Parker

Well, I guess it's my turn in the rotating guest posts while Justin and his wife are on the road. You've already heard from Dodge, Chris and Jax. I'm Kevin from So Much Silence ... so, now that we've got that out of the way ...

For my first post here at the AD, I thought I'd pick something a little alt-country, which, as we've seen time and again here, is a Justin specialty.

As coincidence would have it, it was in Justin's hometown of LA where I discovered Anders Parker, who performed an opening slot for Jay Farrar at the Troubadour. The former frontman of Varnaline, Parker released his solo debut Tell it to the Dust in 2004, and it's a treasure.

Parker never leans too far into the country side of alt-country, his vocal range far superior to any sort of twangy depression. And the guitars have a bright, hopeful sound to them.

According to his site, Parker tells us he's finishing up a new album, with assistance from drummer Ken Coomer (former Wilco) and well-respected pedal steel man Eric Heywood among others.

You Can Still Hear The eMusic

I recently heard that eMusic will be discontinuing its 50 Free MP3 Trial offer after this month. As you all know, I am a huge advocate of this deal, as it truly is a "no strings" offer, as you can cancel immediately afterwards if you so choose to do so.
Many of the artists featured on Aquarium Drunkard the past twelve months have been eMusic purchases or related purchases. Anyway, if you haven't yet -- check out this offer and pick up some new music while the deal is still going.

Crickets - Song Bring Me Back

Whassup Everyone! I'm JAX. I run the show over at RockInsider, but while Justin and his wife are out on vacay I'm helping house sit with Dodge and Chris. Duuudes we're soo gunna throw some bitchin' pool parties!!!

I decided to make my first post about Crickets - A two piece band made of brother and sister Tim and Emily Laursen. The band recently relocated to Los Angeles for a few months. Emily's wonderstruck childlike voice and fantastic lyrics immediately drew me in. Their new album, Song Bring Me Back , is a fantastic collection of slightly irreverent folk songs with the occasional driving guitar.

"One Star Army" the album's upbeat opening track sets the tone for the rest of the disc. By the end of your first listen you're hooked.

You can download more tracks from Song Bring Me Back on the band's MySpace page.

Ola Podrida

Hi Aquarium Drunkard regulars! Justin has recruited some friends to run this joint while he's off galavanting across the country without a care in the world (bastard!). Anyway, you've met Dodge, and I'm Chris from Gorilla vs. Bear. I'll be hitting you guys with some infrequent yet awesome posts over the next couple of months, so here we go.

Austin, TX's Ola Podrida is the perfect band for my first post here on AD. The band's songwriter, David Wingo, also composes scores for David Gordon Green's films, including All the Real Girls and George Washington (I highly recommend those films, by the way). This track is one Justin would love, and I think you guys will like it to.

New Silversun Pickups - Carnavas

Hey AD readers! I'm Dodge and run MOKB. I'll be filling in for a while, now and then, with the help of some other well-know bloggers, while Justin and the missus are away on sojourn. You can read this over at MOKB too, if you want to check it there, but it's really so good, I had to share it twice...

Silversun Pickups

Kids, this new Silversun Pickups album, Carnavas, is outstanding. Truthfully, I'm not a good enough music critic to express all the aural pleasure created by listening to this album. Full of fuzzy guitar, reverb, deep bass grooves and synth beeps and bops, combined with lead singer Brian Aubert's rasp, these songs are great from beginning to end. Carnavas is their first full-length effort and it's due out July 25th on Dangerbird Records. Picking a couple songs to feature almost seemed like an impossible task, as there really are so many good ones. They're hypnotic and create such a melodic soundscape and/or atmosphere. Some are blissful and some are hard-charging, but all come together to create a great album. Silversun Pickups' MySpace.

I saw these kids at SXSW and was impressed, but am so much more so after listening to Carnavas.

Pet Politics :: New Song

Pet Politics is Magnus Larsson of Gothenburg, Sweden. He has found his way onto An Aquarium Drunkard a few times in the past year, as I love his style. A "detached Lou Reed kinda thing" I think I described it in an earlier post. Here is a new song that just popped up on the man's MySpace page. Also, if you can find one, do pick up a copy of his EP released last year on Catbird Records -- it's tops.

You Don't Love Me > Soul Serenade

If you havent heard this shit yet, step to it now. This is a twenty minute live medley of the Allman's at their creative/live zenith combining "You Don't Love" me with King Curtis' "Soul Serenade." This, as far as I know, is the only official release of the tune (found on the Dreams box set), though I imagine some of you hep cats out there have a bootleg of this show somewhere. This has been a mix-tape staple of mine for over ten years, and it's geared up for my cross-country trek. Oh yeah, Great spoken word intro here by Duane.

Ben Weaver :: Unmastered Tracks

Until last week I was not familiar with Ben Weaver nor his music, but judging by these three unmastered tracks from his upcoming (Brian Deck produced) album, it's safe to say I am going to love his full-length. I get a lot of unsolicited albums/eps/mp3s in the mail, but it's times like these when I remember why I do my best to listen to most everything that comes across my desk. Weaver's got it. Like a lo-fi Steve Earle? Check these out.

Snowglobe :: Oxytocin

Snowglobe is the third band this year from Memphis, TN that I have begun listening to (see: Lucero, Harlan T. Bobo). Prior to that, I think Big Star and Elvis were the most recent Memphis exports filling my iPod. Unlike the other two, Snowglobe don't work any kind of inherently Southern, rootsy angle, but opt for a breezier pop sound undercut with darker lyrics.
Here is some official details: "Snowglobe is something of an event or occurance, an ever evolving and shifting phenomenon scattered about the southeastern United States, but you can call it a band. It's easier that way. They have been compared to a wide breadth of artists, including the Band, the Kinks, the Flaming Lips, Leonard Cohen, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys. Snowglobe has undeniably been influenced by all of these talented artists, but also carries the mark and spirit of their hometown: Memphis, TN."
This album (Oxytocin) is the first of a series of Snowglobe releases comprised of tunes composed by each member. Confused? Think KISS back in the '70s, when each member had their own album (Frehley's ruled dood). Minus the evil makeup, pyro-technics, and foot tall moon boots, (sadly).

Drive-by Truckers :: Los Angeles, CA

If I had been in need of a reminder that the Drive-By Truckers are one of the tightest, most professional, ass-kicking Live rock & roll band''s working today, then the one-two punch of the bands two night stay at the House of Blues in Hollywood was it. As of writing this, it's Friday and I'm still licking my wounds.
Whether they intend to or not, the Truckers live and breathe Southern Rock. I'm sure many of you have read that the band did not intend Blessing And A Curse to be a "Southern Rock" album, but it is, and it's the shit. All "crooked straight & filthy-innocent," to quote the great singer-songwriter, Daniel Hutchens. You can dress a hooker up in an expensive dress, but at the end of the night it's still a paid-date.
Naturally, being a Drunkard, night one found me in full-on "fan" mode, funn-hogg front and center, shooting bourbon -- generally howling rebel yells -- and acting about like I did at the Truckers shows years ago back in Athens. Night two saw me don my "media" hat and attempt to act like a real human being. On both nights the band destroyed us with their sweaty, fucked up tales of love gone wrong, family feuds, and cocaine/handjobs. We all just stared up at the stage, begging for more, scared to hit the bar or restroom for fear of missing one of Cooleys' Keith Richards' inspired solos. By the end of night two we all agreed with Patterson that "it's great to be alive." Go see this band Live. Now.

Rather Ripped :: On June 13th

We received a nice treat in the mail at the Drunkard home offices a couple of weeks ago in the form of Sonic Youth's upcoming album Rather Ripped. Have been massively impressed with their last two albums, Murray Street and Sonic Nurse, respectively, I had been anticipating the news of this release with baited breath. Maybe not bated breath, as I am still not all too clear on the origin of that saying, but I've been brimming with anticipation. Yeah, I like that better.
Rather Ripped yet again exemplifies why these cats are the Grateful Dead of Art-Rock. Like those aged hippies, no one does what Sonic Youth does, nor could. Pale imitations, yes, but never matched, nor topped.
I cannot yet comment on the net effect of Jim O'Rourke's exodus from the band, as the full scope of the cumulative album experience has yet to sink in, but so far things are looking up. I played this track below on my radio show last week. Enjoy.

Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On

Sometimes I'll hear a song and the kitsch factor alone pulls me in again and again -- such is the case with Mel McDaniel's "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On." I originally heard the song a few years ago via a scene in the film Personal Velocity , and it's positioning was used perfectly to set the tone and mood of both the scene and it's character. The two are now intrinsically linked in my mind.
Go ahead, son -- add this piece of '80s fluff-Country to your treasure chest of guilty pleasures. Grab me a beer while you're at it.

LUNA :: Penthouse

Due to Monday's protest demonstrations here in L.A., many of our main streets were closed. This event lead me to weaving in and out of curious side streets while trying to make my way from the mid-Wilshire area to Hollywood. This turned out to be no small feat, folks. The endeavor wound up taking a couple of hours, but was not all bad as I saw a lot of little neighborhoods I had yet to explore that lay just off the beaten path (such is the norm in L.A.). Oh, and I also had Luna's Penthouse with me.
I always knew Penthouse was the absolute shit, but Monday solidified that fact. Day turned to dusk as I snaked through neighborhood after neighborhood with Dean Wareham's nasal-tone and guitarwork doing most of the driving, as I opted to sit back and take it all in "23 Minutes In Brussels" style. Dig?

Fandango :: El Roadtrip Pt. 2

I was thinking this series could have an nice alternate title of "songs for a good barfight." Here is another six pack of Country & Western tear-jerkers and beer-swillers that will assist in getting me across the country this summer.

The Brokedown :: Silverlake Tuesday Nights

If you live in L.A., go check out The Brokedown who will be holding down the fort at The Silverlake Lounge every Tuesday in May. These guys are the real deal, and I expect you will be hearing more from them in the latter part of 2006. Here is a track off their Dutchman' Gold EP.

Fandango :: El Roadtrip Pt. I

This weekend The Drunkard moved out of his L.A. home of the past 4+ years, threw everything in strorage, and is heading out on a Fandango of a road trip for two months beginning in two weeks. Will be crossing the Rockies, thru the Midwest (hitting Chicago, St. Louis) onwards to NYC, and D.C. -- down the Eastern seaboard and hanging in the durrty South for a good bit. I'll post my return route in July when it's time to mosey on back to California.
All this brings me to the topic of today's post. I need some fierce road music, and only one thing will suffice. Bad, nasty, old-school outlaw Country & Western mixes to get me across the U. S. of A. So here they are -- I will be posting these in installments. Collect them all.
