The Meters II, NYC :: Live Upload Series VI

George Porter with Professor Longhair

Okay, I suppose the Heads posts were enough of a segue to steer us out of the indie/alt.country/folk territory for awhile and into some deep New Orleans funk & soul. And I do mean funk, this shit is greasy -- gets right under your fingernails funky.

Humid, hot, sticky grooves -- damn, it really is that good. If you downloaded The Meters Live Upload Series III, I would venture to say this show is even a tad bit better. And, if you didn't, you best get on it.

Talking Heads :: Speaking In Tongues (Re-Issue)

Next to the Jonathan Demme's Live documentary Stop Making Sense, Speaking In Tongues may be my personal favorite "proper" Heads album. While the excellent Remain In Light is their most fully realized work, Speaking In Tongues walks the thin line between the band's art house sensibilities and the more mainstream pop sound they would embrace following Stop Making Sense. So, although it is hard to pick your favorite child, as I love every facet of the band's career, this album contains This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody), which resides in my list of all-time favorite songs.
This reissue is a dual-disc with a DVD on the flipside featuring videos from the singles. The CD side contains two alternate/unfinished tracks from the Speaking In Tongues sessions, hardly essential but interesting nonetheless. The 5.1 surround sound is what you're really paying for here.

Talking Heads :: Remain In Light (Re-issue)

Believe the hype. Talking Heads were one of the finest/inventive bands of the 20th century and this album is their opus. Coming on the tails of Fear of Music, Byrne and company fused post-punk, funk, latin-rhythms, pop, and everything else available in the mix on this, their fourth album. "Polyrhythmic" gets thrown around a lot when discussing this album, and it's as apt a description if there ever was one. From the first few seconds of the opening track "Born Under Punches" (immediately punctuated by Byrne's yell/growl) it's apparent you are in for a Talking Heads ride unlike anything before.

This reissue is a dual-disc with a DVD on the flipside featuring two previously unreleased performances of the Heads 1980 appearance on German Televison program Rockpop. The CD side contains four unfinished outtakes from the Remain In Light sessions, hardly essential but interesting nonetheless. 5.1 surround sound is what you're really paying for here.

Ryan Adams :: The Suicide Handbook

As promised, the Lost Album Series continues with yet another unofficial Ryan Adams record. The Suicide Handbook is said to have been originally slated as the follow-up to 2000's Heartbreaker. The uber-sparse, acoustic, and downbeat arrangements must not have wowed Adams' new label, Lost Highway, as he shelved the sessions and moved to Los Angeles to record what would become 2001's Gold. Fans will notice five tracks which later appeared (in a different format) on Gold, and three tracks that landed on 2002's Demolition compilation (same recordings, mix cleaned up). These sessions fill in the blanks in Adams progression from new-folkie as witnessed on Heartbreaker to bombastic classic rock revivalist a-la Gold. Tracks such as Gold's "Touch, Feel & Lose" take on a subtle beauty in this setting. Essential listening.
**Slight imperfection at the end of "Wildflowers," which is reported to be on the master tapes.

Return Of The Grievous Angel :: A Tribute

There have been many a "Gram parsons tribute album" over the past 30+ years, but this 1999 release is one of the best. A major factor being Emmylou Harris's involvement, lending both credibilty and her amazing talent to the project. Most of the usual suspects are in attendance (Wilco, Whiskeytown, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, etc.) -- as well as some surprises (Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Beck).

PASTE Magazine :: Daniel Hutchens

Well, I was going to try and keep things under wraps until a proper website was up and running, but recent events (PASTE magazine's best living songwriter poll) have changed that.
An Aquarium Drunkard has started a small label called Autumn Tone Records, and I am honored that one of our first releases will be none other than Daniel Hutchens. If you have been reading here for any time at all, you are well aware of my fondness for both Hutchens solo music and his band Bloodkin's body of work.
More on that to come, but for now, check out these MP3s and head off to vote for Daniel in your top 20 out of 100 Greatest Living Songwriters in PASTE magazine's poll. A big congrats to Daniel for his nomination among such esteemed artists. Well deserved, Daniel...cheers.

Ryan Adams 48 Hours :: Lost Album Series

In my opinion this is easily the record that should have followed up 2001's Gold. Instead a few of the cuts were cherry-picked for the 2002 Demolition release. Recorded shortly after the Gold sessions in Los Angeles -- with longtime producer Ethan Johns at the helm -- 48 Hours is classic Adams, mining country and folk traditions. A few years ago I read that Adams, in part, wanted to capture the essence of a 1970's California country-rock album here. He comes damn close too with "Walls," "Angelina," and "Born yesterday." Be sure to download "Drunk & Fucked Up," one of my favorites in his prolific catalog.

So Much For The City...

I recently revisited So Much For The City on a road trip and forgot all over again that these guys are not from rustic California canyon country, but urban Dublin. Well done, fellas...got me again. I was reminded of what a great album this is through and through, a bit derivative yes, but so is everything in 2006. Sooo, if you didn't hear this one when released a few years back, sample the below tracks. Captures a very Neil Young Harvest era vibe, which is high praise.

Robbie Fulks :: Georgia Hard, Indeed

Bloodshot recording artists, Robbie Fulks, has been in the country music game for a long time now. Fulks makes country records. Not alt.country, and not Nashville Music Row country, just plain old country. His music would seem as fitting 35 years ago, as today. Recommended to fans of old-school C&W music. His latest album, Georgia Hard, ranges from murder ballads to country love songs.

Vic Chesnutt :: Drunk/Is The Actor Happy?

I do like me some polarizing artists -- makes it more fun somehow. Vic Chesnutt is such an artist; you are either in his camp or you wanna get as far away as possible. Other examples of this include, but not limited to: The Jesus Lizard, any Will Oldham project. What to my ears sounds like raw pieces of brilliance, sounds to some as raw, lazy shit. I'll take it everytime. **Check the excellent WSP cover

Manassas :: Stephen Stills' Wilderness Realized

"Everybody bird-dogging my girl, so tough..."
When folks of my generation think of Stephen Stills, more often than not, their perception is that of a mere sliver of the artist's career. Most of the time, the work with his "supergroup," Manassas, is left out of the conversation altogether, in favor of his more well known and commercially viable recordings (CSNY.)

Manassas is my favorite of Stills' albums. As a whole, in my eyes, this is where he peaked, where it all came together for him. Blues, jazz, latin grooves, folk, rock & roll and country all coexist here within the album's framework -- each with it's own sub-category: "The Raven," "The Wilderness," "Consider," and "Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay." Keep in mind that when initially released in 1972, Manassas was a double album meaning each side of the record had it's own theme. Below is a sampling from each of the 4 sections.

Notes: '70s Coke Rock. Stills' wah-wah is out of control and out front on several of these songs (awesome). Stills' old blues man persona makes an appearance or two.

Drive-By Truckers :: Alabama Ass Whuppin'

Alright, admittingly, I am pretty fired up for the upcoming Blessing And A Curse album. You'll probably see a lot of DBT posts between now and then. Good news if you're a fan, if ya ain't, well...not so much. Alabama Ass Whuppin' is an interesting Live document in an interesting period of the band's career. I saw the band in this incarnation, and this is a pretty accurate picture of what their live shows were like: abrasive, loud, loose, and louder.
While I do like this album, many of the songs are inferior to their studio counterparts (e.g. Margo & Harold) while some excel with the live energy (Why Henry Drinks ). A great overall snapshot of the band prior to the impending line-up changes and the accolades their next album, Southern Rock Opera, deservedly received. Turn these up loud.
**Album has some great spoken word banter by Patterson Hood on a few of the tracks

Red House Painters :: Down Colorful Hill

Down Colorful Hill was the Red House Painters coming out party. Kozelek's haunting angst-rock had found it's way to tape, and the results were both noteworthy and emotionally charged. These harrowing tales of pain became the band's calling card in the years to follow.

The late gram Parsons
Prior to his stint with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers a young Gram Parsons formed The International Submarine Band shortly after dropping out of Harvard. One of my favorite country singers, Parsons, even at a young age, was able to convey an honesty and truth to his music that only increased with subsequent albums. "Ashes to ashes, trust to dust, I don't know what it means to be burned by something you love so much, I think I must be living the dream..." -- Chris Mills

Deadboy & Elephantmen :: Are The Night Sky

It would be easy to write these two off as a White Stripes knock off: a) boy/girl duo - check. b) lo-fi garage rock - check. c) affection for bare-boned blues sludge riffs coupled with the oh-so-quiet/precious moments. check. But you would do yourself a disservice by stopping there and not delving past the surface. In the early '00s I dismissed many, many a good band due to the proliferation of the "The" bands at the time. I made a conscious effort to not do that again.

AD Exclusive :: Matthew Ryan Interview 2006

Yer Bird Records owner, Morgan King, put on his interviewer's cap on behalf of Aquarium Drunkard and got behind the scenes with Nashville based singer-songwriter Matthew Ryan. The following is a candid Q&A conducted via email...
---------------
AD: Over the past year you've become a lot more interactive with your fans online through MySpace - as an already successful artist, has that been an effective tool for communicating news and reaching new listeners?
MR: I have a genuine interest in people whether they listen to my records or not. The fella at the counter at the corner store I go to everyday. The girl at the coffee shop. The people that load baggage under the plane when you're staring out that small window. Myspace is a lot like staring out that small window except you get to interact. I've recieved some beautiful emails from people. Direct contact with a listener is like driving by a house that you built. There's someone living in there now. It's a relief. It reminds me that my work exists outside of myself. As far as new listeners go? I don't know. I only know that I want to be found. You can't be found if you're hiding in a room somewhere wondering if you're a ghost.
AD: I'm a really big fan of your self-released, DIY CDr albums. Do you have any plans to ever revisit releasing songs that way?
MR: I'm always working at home. In fact, since Concussion, all my records have been home recordings of some sort. The difference between the DYI's and the 'Records' is that there are better mics and a few more musicians. For the most part, I play everything on the DIY records. With a few exceptions that were outtakes. I'm ambitious and hopeful. I'm always swinging for the fence trying to define that air that influences language and mood, defines where my head is at. Whether it's a distorted acoustic or a keyboard that moves like the ocean, it's instinctual. There's a song called "Victory Waltz" on my next solo record. I just finished mixing it. Anyway, there are few tracks on their that were recorded in my loft. Just me and a lot of scratching my head trying to find it.
AD: "Martin Luther Ave." on the Strays Don't Sleep record is a particularly visceral song, and, although it's broad, it also seemingly touches on the current administration's treatment of soldiers in Iraq. How much of an impact has the current polictical climate had on your songwriting?
MR: Well, there's a certain apathy today that worries me. I don't think the Bush Administration is responsible for that. Although they go far to confuse and misdirect issues to the point where citizens are left to fumble around like keystone cops. But this isn't a new phenomena. On some level that's the role of government. It's OUR role to keep them honest. It's hard today because I get no real sense that the News, whether ABC or Fox, is interested in being the people's go between, voice or distilled information purveyor. I don't criticize the Bush Administration in my writing. I think that some have misunderstood that, with their reactionary, defensive vitriol. I've gotten some ugly emails and confrontations from people that didn't listen past their hate lefty artists glasses. My socially charged songs are hoping to rally activism, start a conversation, insight a riot of ideas. I am a liberal. I believe in equality of opportunity. Our public education is a mess. For the poor to rise to a place of any influence there has to be an almost biblical hand and otherworldy luck. I think it's hard for the privileged to imagine the walls that surround the poor, the working poor and the shrinking middle class. I recently saw a news program that clearly stated that the real estate boom will continue because it will be motivated by the top 10% of income earners. In other words, safe neighborhood McMansions and good schools are available to those that can afford it. The rest? Well, let them eat cake and mow their lawns.
AD: At times there's been a surprisingly politically conservative attitude by posters on the message board at matthewryanonline.com. Does that strike you as cognitively dissonant? As a songwriter who is unafraid to deal with social issues in your songs, how do the politics of your listeners affect the music?
MR: Yeah, there has. I don't think they're just being provocative. Maybe sometimes. I've changed a couple minds. I guess I can sleep at night. And they can too. They seem like smart people to me. Most have their ideas motivated by true beliefs and founded reasons. I respect that. I listen. But it hasn't changed me. I know who I am. There's a saying, I can't remember exactly, but something about 'to be young and liberal is natural, to be old and liberal is stupid.' Something like that. Anyway, that's bullshit. My ideas, my philosophy is all based in idealism. I will not let the world break my back, my romanticism or my will. It's important to hold fast and believe in the best of men and women, even when maybe you've witnessed or feared the worst.
AD: Even though it's a cliche music interview question, I would honestly love to know what you've been listening to lately. Any great records flying under the radar that we might have missed?
MR: The National, Thad and Kaitlyn's Begonias and there's some guy that has a song called Started Drinking Again that I like quite a bit.

When beck signed to Geffen it was with the caveat that he could still release albums under other labels. Such was the case with 1994's One Foot In The Grave, released on Washington state's K Records. Plastic Ono Band: A seething, frightened, angry glimpse into an artist's pained soul. Arguably John's best solo output, if completely misunderstood at the time of it's release. The Acrobat is it's own little universe. A quiet, vulnerable place where it rains most of the time and the inhabitants rarely speak above a whisper. Coffee is served all day, and everyone tends to stay up late and think too much. Lights are used sparingly, and there is no such season as Summer here. The music only plays on turntables and the tone is thick enough to keep you warm if you listen hard enough. The Acrobat is not for all of us...as some would not understand it's pleasures. But I do.

Live Upload Series V :: Ryan Adams (Acoustic)

Notes: Traded with someone for this show about three years ago after seeing the Los Angeles date of this same run. Great solo "acoustic Ryan" show with excellent, sparse renditions of his post-Whiskeytown repertoire. Several songs feature cello, violin and/or background vocal accompaniment. Steve Earle :: I Thought You Should Know

I am a big fan of most of Steve Earle's material -- the post-prison/post-addiction stuff in particular. While I do agree with some of the man's politics, some of it does get a little heavy handed for my taste. That's when a song like "I Thought You Should Know" comes in to save the day. A good old fashioned down and out, lovesick tearjerker in the midst of a political album.

Simon & Garfunkel :: New York Folk Tales

The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been with me for a long time. I first bought their greatest hits compilation in the sixth grade after overhearing it at a friend's house while his mom listened as she did whatever it is mom's do. I think it was the first "adult" music purchase I ever made...before then my tastes were more along the lines of Ratt and Motley Crue, Zod bless 'em both.

I admittingly don't listen to them all that much anymore, but sometimes the occasion calls and warrants for nothing less than these two guys. While all the albums are good, here are some tracks you can find on their most recent "best of" collection.

Bob Dylan :: Under The Covers

Highway 61 Revisited Revisited

In September of 2005 Uncut magazine released a tribute CD covering Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited album. The pronounced Americana/roots-rock lineup does a fine job covering the iconic album each in their own unique way.

Drive-By Truckers :: Tracks Until April

There are a few bands recording today that I anxiously await their latest output, Drive-By Truckers is one of those bands. The new album from DBT, A Blessing And A Curse, is due out April 18th in the here in the U.S., but in the meantime, here are some tracks off the past two albums to hold you over.

Mofro :: Front Porch Soul

Mofro's debut album, Blackwater, was my favorite release of 2002. I loved it...still love it. Southern soul, funk, and front porch blues. A medley of influences spanning Stevie Wonder at his funkiest to Exile-era Stones. That Muscle Schoals sound is dripping all over this one.

Ryan Adams :: Destroyer (Lost Album #3)

This post concludes the Ryan Adams leg of the Lost Album Series. The Destroyer album was never officially released, but the sessions did leak on the Internet in early 2005. These tracks were recorded with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, in Nashville, around the same time as the Heartbreaker sessions, and in the same folkie vein. Note the version of Heartbreaker's "Bartering Lines" as well as the amped up rock version/cover of Welch's "The Revelator."

Whiskeytown :: Those Weren't The Days II

Read Part I: Here
Folks -- As promised, here is the remainder of Whiskeytown's unreleased album Those Weren't The Days . Please note I have not included tracks 10, 12, 13 & 15 as they were made available commercially via the Faithless Street reissue and the Hope Floats soundtrack. Hope Floats?? Did I read that right?
The unreleased album Those Weren't The Days is the missing link between the rural tone of Faithless Street and the more produced/polished sound of the band's follow-up Stranger's Almanac. I believe the album can now be found on various torrent sites, but I will post the remainder in future posts. A must have for Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams fans. **Note the first track, "My Heart Is Broken," was re-worked by Adams for his 2005 album Jacksonville City Nights.
