Jens Lekman :: Swede Sounds

Jens (left) seated with Erlend Oye
I think I first got turned onto Jens music via Swedes Please. Another fine example of an artist whose music I may not have heard if it was not for some of great music blogs out there. Jens morphs from bombastic pop star to Nick Drake-like folkie with ease, mastering both. Listen to this recent NPR interview with the songwriter: Jens Lekman: Idiosyncratic Pop from Sweden.
Jens Secretly Canadian website has many, many Jens early demos and Internet-only tracks. Visit their site as I have only posted a handful below.

Whiskeytown :: Those Weren't The Days

The unreleased album Those Weren't The Days is the missing link between the rural tone of Faithless Street and the more produced/polished sound of the band's follow-up Stranger's Almanac. I believe the album can now be found on various torrent sites, but I will post the remainder in future posts. A must have for Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams fans. **Note the first track, "My Heart Is Broken," was re-worked by Adams for his 2005 album Jacksonville City Nights.

Daniel Hutchens/Eric Martinez :: On Tour

One of my favorite rock-n-roll troubadours, Daniel Hutchens, is on the road playing a few acoustic dates paired with guitarist Eric Martinez. Now I've only been to Idaho once, and not to Moscow, but IF Moscow IS indeed near you I would highly recommend checking out their show. If anyone goes to the Portland gigs, please send me an email with the details as a California tour is not in their immediate plans. Listen to these to hear what I mean.
*Jan. 31 :: Johns Alley Moscow, ID
*Feb. 2 :: Poor Richards Portland, OR
*Feb. 5 :: Cozmic Pizza Eugene, OR
Also: I watched the "Geddup Noise" for the first time today on homestar runner. Ridiculous.

Harry & The Potters :: These Nerds Rock

"We play songs about books!"
I first heard these guys last summer via Matt at You Ain't No Picasso. They have been a somewhat guilty pleasure ever since. Their schtick? Basically they crib the whole Harry Potter thing, from their wardrobe down to their song lyrics. Ridicuous, yes. Entertaining, absolutely. They tour the East coast quite a bit -- from clubs to public librarys (fitting, no?) -- so if you go check them out, do drop me a note and tell me about it, as I imagine the Live show is straight corn nuts.

Don't F*ck With The Star Room Boys

"Country music lets you write about anything - any truth you think you know."
-- Dave Marr
Hard country and constant sorrow. The Star Room Boys music is steeped heavily in both. My favorite honky-tonk band may be no more, but in their wake they left us with two amazing, heartbreakung albums. **Fans of Dwight Yoakam and Richard Buckner's warble take notice.

The Joggers :: With a Cape and a Cane

Update: Music Is Not Dead interviewed these guys..read it here...
I ignored this band/album for a long time. Turns out that was my mistake, as both are well worth your time. Describing their "sound"....so here is where I'm coming from -- having never read any promotional info on the band, etc. -- sounds like: early Stones/Brian Jonestown Massacre/Clash/Libertines. A pretty enjoyable mix of influences to boot. Check it out below.

The Walkmen :: Look For Third Album In April

Via the tripwire: New York's The Walkmen have completed all work on their third album, according to a post on the band's website. Though a title or track listing has yet to be revealed, we do know that it is slated for an April release via Record Collection. The band is currently on a short, five-date tour testing out the new material in front of an audience. *Here are two tracks each off the band's previous albums. Check website for upcoming tour dates and more.

slint

Is Spiderland my favorite album of the '90s? That's tough...I can't say for sure, but it's pretty damn close. It still resonates with me as much as it did at the time of initial release. I won't go into all the bands Slint influenced over the past 15+ years as it's obvious once you hear the music. Slint's career, while short lived, was highly original.

Kathleen Edwards :: The "Building 55" EP

It's 1999. Kathleen Edwards records a six-song EP entitled "Building 55" and presses 500 copies. This EP, now out of print, is the first recorded output of Edwards' career prior to her signing with a label and releasing her full length debut, 2003's Failer. Here are six tracks off "Building 55" for posterity. Brittle, affecting alt.country.

Currituck County :: Channeling John Fahey

Country, folk, raga, jazz, and bluegrass. All these genres and more play out and interweave in Kevin Barker's wanderlust album Ghost Man on First. This first installment in the Ghost Man trilogy is challenging to say the least, but rewarding under the right circumstances. Fans of free-form neo-folk should dig, i.e. fans of Animal Collective, Bright Black Morning Light, etc.

Ryan Adams :: Austin City Limits [Video]

photo via graboff.com
In November of last year Ryan Adams and his band The Cardinals took the stage on the famed Austin City Limits television program. Airing this past Friday on PBS in most major U.S. markets, the broadcast featured seven songs spanning Adams solo career as far back as his debut album Heartbreaker. Entirety of the broadcast split into videos for download below.

Jesse Malin/Ryan Adams :: Brooklyn & Cover

Upon it's release, music critic Jerry McCulley described Jesse Malin's debut as "heartfelt country-by-way-of-Delancey-Street." Sounds apt to me. For those of you who didn't pick up The Fine Art of Self Destruction a few years ago, check out these three version's of Malin's "Brooklyn" below. The first two can both be found on the album, (with the "rock version" bookending the set) and the third is a country inflected cover by Ryan Adams who produced Malin's debut. All very much worth your time.

Live Upload Series III :: The Meters - 1977

Nobody..and I mean nobody funks it up like The Meters did in their prime. Shit-hot grooves. I have collected a number of shows from the band's '70s hey-day, and this is one of my favorites. Culled from a 1977 New Orleans Live radio broadcast -- complete with a smokey-voiced DJ popping in and out during the duration of the show.
Great banter from the band too. Several times throughout the show Art Neville speaks directly to the greater New Orleans radio audience, telling them to get with it and come on down to the show.

PJ Harvey :: Stories From The City/Sea

First, check out this Live version of "Big Exit" from Melbourne, Australia's Live At The Rooftop series that originally aired on Radio 3RRR.

Now on to Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. While I have played cuts from this record on the radio to the right, I have not dedicated a proper post to the greatness that is this album. Until now. Retaining the attitude that marks her early records, yet adopting more conventional pop sensibilities, this is by far my favorite of PJ Harvey's work to date. Also her most accessible. Gone is the absolutist lo-fi aesthetic that became her early '90s trademark, and in it's place a seasoned Harvey in command of all of her faculties to convey her tales of circumstance and relationships.

**Radiohead fans will take notice that Thom Yorke guests on the track This Mess We're In.
