The unreleased album Those Weren't The Days is the missing link between the rural tone of Faithless Street and the more produced/polished sound of the band's follow-up Stranger's Almanac. I believe the album can now be found on various torrent sites, but I will post the remainder in future posts. A must have for Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams fans. **Note the first track, "My Heart Is Broken," was re-worked by Adams for his 2005 album Jacksonville City Nights.

Here are a couple of tunes in light of the news of Grandaddy's upcoming retirement. Look for final album Just Like the Fambly Cat in May of 2006. Band has no plans to tour in support of album. Read the news over at Pitchfork...
Via the tripwire: New York's The Walkmen have completed all work on their third album, according to a post on the band's website. Though a title or track listing has yet to be revealed, we do know that it is slated for an April release via Record Collection. The band is currently on a short, five-date tour testing out the new material in front of an audience. *Here are two tracks each off the band's previous albums. Check website for upcoming tour dates and more.
Is Spiderland my favorite album of the '90s? That's tough...I can't say for sure, but it's pretty damn close. It still resonates with me as much as it did at the time of initial release. I won't go into all the bands Slint influenced over the past 15+ years as it's obvious once you hear the music. Slint's career, while short lived, was highly original.
It's 1999. Kathleen Edwards records a six-song EP entitled "Building 55" and presses 500 copies. This EP, now out of print, is the first recorded output of Edwards' career prior to her signing with a label and releasing her full length debut, 2003's Failer. Here are six tracks off "Building 55" for posterity. Brittle, affecting alt.country.
Country, folk, raga, jazz, and bluegrass. All these genres and more play out and interweave in Kevin Barker's wanderlust album Ghost Man on First. This first installment in the Ghost Man trilogy is challenging to say the least, but rewarding under the right circumstances. Fans of free-form neo-folk should dig, i.e. fans of Animal Collective, Bright Black Morning Light, etc.

Championed by the late John Peel, among others, Cantrell's recorded catalog has gotten stronger with each subsequent release. Below are some covers she has worked out over the years, plus two songs from her last two studio releases.
Upon it's release, music critic Jerry McCulley described Jesse Malin's debut as "heartfelt country-by-way-of-Delancey-Street." Sounds apt to me. For those of you who didn't pick up The Fine Art of Self Destruction a few years ago, check out these three version's of Malin's "Brooklyn" below. The first two can both be found on the album, (with the "rock version" bookending the set) and the third is a country inflected cover by Ryan Adams who produced Malin's debut. All very much worth your time.

Nobody..and I mean nobody funks it up like The Meters did in their prime. Shit-hot grooves. I have collected a number of shows from the band's '70s hey-day, and this is one of my favorites. Culled from a 1977 New Orleans Live radio broadcast -- complete with a smokey-voiced DJ popping in and out during the duration of the show. Labels: Funk, Live Upload Series
First, check out this Live version of "Big Exit" from Melbourne, Australia's Live At The Rooftop series that originally aired on Radio 3RRR.**Radiohead fans will take notice that Thom Yorke guests on the track This Mess We're In.
