Sonic Youth :: KCRW 06.10.04

Sonic Youth: One of my longtime crushes. Their last two albums have not only been good, but some of the best music of their storied career. The latter of the two, 2004's Sonic Nurse, continues where Murray Street left off, expanding and riffing on familiar themes and motifs recognizable to any veteran fan. The tracks below are from the band's October June '04 visit with KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic radio show in support of the SN album.

Cameron Crowe :: A Soundtrack Enthusiast III

Part III of the Soundtrack Enthusiast Series. For the most part I have enjoyed the majority of Cameron Crowe's films...not so fast Elizabethtown. Having said that, Elizabethtown's soundtrack -- as the norm with all Crowe's films -- was good, especially the "road-trip" sequence toward the end. Below are some tracks post-Say Anything. Read part two: (David Lynch) here. Read part one: (Wes Anderson) here.

There's that. Look for my other links "highlighted" on the blogroll next time. Also, am I missing out on some great blogs & daily reads? Feel free to fill me in below. xx00xxx00 - satisfied '75

Maximum R&B :: The Who..The Kids Are Alright

"The Who is a bloody wild animal and it has to be fed chunks of raw meat and Southern Comfort. It can't feed on anything less."
--Pete Townshend, New York Times, June 13th, 1974.
The Who: bombastic, excessive, crude, vulgar, drunk, unfashionably fucking awesome. Through a vicodin haze (er, neck injury) I recently sat down to watch The Who's The Kids Are Alright dvd from Netflix. It was the shit. If you haven't seen it yet, rent it. Now I have to dig out my copy of Quadrophenia and listen to Pete get all deep/operatic again. **I had to watch the clip of the band playing "Young Man's Blues" twice, so here are two different versions. Go practice your windmill guitar...and leg kicks.

Kathleen Edwards :: Thanksgiving Leftovers

Long weekends are a slice of heaven. Long weekends coupled with Thanksgiving leftovers are one step closer. While going through some old records post-feast I happened upon Kathleen Edwards' 2003 debut Failer. Failer is one of those albums that sounds like an old friend you haven't seen in awhile, yet things pick up right where they left off. Effortlessly. Here's five off her debut and five off here sophomore LP Back To Me. We'll start off with my favorite Edwards song "Westby." Love these lyrics...

Last Week's Albums:: eMusic Downloads

So I am curious to hear who got on board with eMusic, and what albums you procured. Last week I downloaded GBV "Under The Bushes, Under The Stars," Sun Records "The Sun Essentials," and Fugazi's "Furniture EP." A lot of the independent labels are playing ball it seems, so this may become my one-stop-shop in the future. Let me know whatcha got...turn me on to something.

Thad Cockrell :: Redux

I posted about Thad back in June and referred to him as "a phenomenal north carolina singer/songwriter working the twang....hate to make comparisons, but imagine the quieter moments of a young whiskeytown-era ryan adams sans hubris." Still fairly apt, but having spent several months digesting his catalog (and seeing his and Caitlin Cary's duets tour this past October) I want to plug him again in hopes of attracting some new folks. Give Thad a listen if you dig on Southern, country-tinged, singer-songwriters.

The Star Room Boys :: A One-Off Reunion Show

One of my favorite honky tonk acts of the last decade, The Star Room Boys, got together last week at The Caledonia Lounge in Athens, GA for a one-off reunion show. I would have paid top dollar to have been there. Bit Torrent courtesy of Athens taper Sloan Simpson.

Phosphorescent :: Athens Southern Warble

Presently touring the West coast (played L.A.'s Hotel Cafe' last night) is Matthew Houck, aka Phosphorescent, out of Athens, GA. Imagine a younger Will Oldham and you're on the right track. Houck & co. have a new album out on Misra Records, entitled Aw Come Aw Wry, further illustrating the Athens music scene is alive and doing very well. Read what CMJ said : "The songs of Phosphorescent leader Matthew Houck are steeped in the type of cacophonous glory that just can't be forced or premeditated. As ethereal organs and jangly guitars rise to a peak accented by what we can only assume is the bashing of garbage cans, there's something uniquely organic about the whole ordeal (the cans were just there, man). Having already made some significant achievements on a debut disc and EP, the latest from this young Georgian continues to cement his reputation as an incredibly talented and creative artist in Americana, and with Aw Come Aw Wry, he'll undoubtedly be stumbling into more hearts and minds. Voicing his tales of woe, love and the like with a Southern warble, Houck is at ease performing with nothing but his acoustic guitar. But as he proved on past efforts, he's also a composer of gorgeous triple-A symphonies, spicing up his tracks with haunting gothic choirs, crashes of homemade percussion and stripped-down horns. Lemonheads :: Stove (1990)

This was the first Lemonheads song I heard at 15 ,back in 1991, on a mix-tape (remember those?) a girl had made for me. Awww. And though Evan and the band went on to make more polished/professional recordings, this may remain my favorite track. Stove is off the 1990 album Lovey, but I first heard it on the A Matter of Degrees soundtrack via said mix-tape. **Never saw the movie, but take a look at the excellent line-up of bands that were on the OST....Alex Chilton, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving :: Alice's Restaurant

I grew up in Atlanta, and every Thanksgiving as far back as I can remember, one of the local FM radio stations would play Alice's Restaurant...all 18+ minutes of it. Sometimes several times throughout the day. I can't speak for the rest of the album, but from here on out this song will become a standard Thanksgiving tradition for as long as the Drunkard is online. Oh, and since it is Thanksgiving, many, many thanks to all you readers, commenters, and other music bloggers who have given advice, insight, etc, the past 5 months. Now go get your turkey on. ** you can also listen to this tune on the radio to the right.

AC/DC :: Channeled Through Mark Kozelek

Oddly enough this is the Kozelek album that really got me hooked on his voice and arrangements. Prior to this, I wouldn't have imagined someone could craft these gems out of a handful of old AC/DC songs from the late '70s. Then again, I hadn't heard Mark Kozelek yet. Little did I know this is the man's stock 'n trade. What's Next To The Moon was the gateway album for me, as I am now a huge fan of anything he is associated with.

Get To Know :: Swedes Please

An MP3/Music blog that has really grabbed my attention lately is Swedes Please. Brought to us by the same folks (Craig) who also manages the excellent Songs: Illinois blog, SP focuses on new and up-coming regional artists. Self described as: "Mp3's from Swedish bands. Mostly singing in English and mostly better than what you hear on the radio in the US. Free and legal links to mp3's from multiple music genres (including Americana, indie rock, hip-hop, electronica etc)." Being that I know next to nothing about the Swedish underground, I ask Craig if he would mind wrapping up five or so of his favorite Swedish artists of the past year. Here are his picks:
Well there you have it...straight from the horse's mouth if you will. Big thanks to Craig for his insight -- well done.

McCartney :: Between The Bands

When it comes to the post-Beatles output I am a Lennon/Harrison kinda guy. But that is not to say Paul did not have some great things to say as well, in particular his first solo album simply entitled McCartney. It was recorded before the Beatles disbanded while on holiday on a 4-track in his living room with wife Linda. The first track below is off that album...second track is off 1971's Wild Life album. Both great tunes.

Lou Reed's New York State of Mind...

Here are two tracks that have been circulating in my iTunes the past couple of weeks. I don't know the remainder of the tracks on the Street Hassle lp, but the New York album is classic Lou Reed-styled romanticism. Dirty clean.

The White Foliage :: The Zurich Album

Fall Records is hot right now. Between Page France and now The White Foliage they are getting quite a bit of airplay in and around the Drunkard's L.A. home office. Mrs. Satisfied and I like this one quite a bit, & would deem it a morning/night album, best enjoyed with nothing much going on...slow..easy..relaxed. Ethereal dream-avant-pop. Here's what the label says: "Formed in late 2001, catalyzed by a mutual love for Neutral Milk Hotel, we traded tapes through the mail and built up a vast (or at least respectable) surplus of vaguely experimental pop. At some point Marie mused, "Hey, maybe we could act like a band." I was like, "Totally." So we did.We’re just two kids with hundreds of miles of frozen tundra between us and the nearest scene. Only we’re the best band ever."

Modest Mouse :: Tiny Cites Re-revisited

I am very much taken with Sun Kil Moon's latest covers album Tiny Cities (even more so than when I posted about it earlier this month). Kozelek creates such unique interpretations that I have had to go back and dig out my Modest Mouse records -- it's been fascinating to compare/contrast the two. That being said, here are a couple of the original MM tracks on the Sun Kil Moon cover's LP.

The Velvet Underground :: Peel Slowly Demos

Check out these initial VU demos off their Peel Slowly and See box set. All rough and stripped down early takes. I'm Waiting For The Man has a particularly interesting arrangement...almost rock-a-billy.

Santo & Johnny - Sleepwalk (1959)

Brothers Santo & Johnny Farina, recorded this sleepy, pedal-steel soaked classic in 1959. You may not recognize their names, but the music is immediately recognizable from the song's first notes. There is something wonderfully sad and beautiful within the tune's instrumental framework. It's no suprise this song peaked at #1 in it's day. Check it out below.

Roy Orbison :: An Other-Worldly Voice

The David Lynch post earlier this week fed my Roy Orbison jones, but it is by no means sated. Several months ago I featured a post on Richard Hawley's latest record -- mentioned he is one of the only folks in popular music today doing it in an Orbison-esque (sic) style. I highly recommend Hawley, but first ease back and listen to these.
Note: it took me a long-time to realize the brilliance and scope of this music.....glad I got it.
