*** As used in Shopgirl, no OST available
[The Squid & The Whale comes highly recommended. Both the film and the official soundtrack are top-notch. Scored by LUNA's Dean Wareham with urbane folkie nuggets interspersed throughout. Beautiful.]
[The other two films were fair, but comprised of good music. Mark Kozelek plays the frontman for a fictional band in Shopgirl -- I counted two Sun Kil Moon songs, though there may have been a third.]

Dream Syndicate :: The Days of Wine & Roses

This post is a little tardy, as I meant to get on it after reading medication a few weeks ago. The '01 re-issue of Dream Syndicate's The Days of Wine & Roses album has 7 bonus tracks -- all worth your time. This track has been on the radio to the right the past 10 days too if you want a sample before downloading.

Galaxie 500 :: Peel Sessions 2005 Release

Not the first Galaxie 500 posting here at the Drunkard, but this is the first topical Galaxie 500 post. By that I mean Galaxie 500's Peel Sessions will see an official release date November 14, 2005 -- eight tracks spanning the groups '89 & '90 sessions recorded for the BBC's Radio One John Peel Show. A must-have for completists. Below are two cuts of the disc, both thoughtful eclectic covers.

Sun Kil Moon :: Tiny Cities

I predict this album will generate a fair amount of initial fanfare. First, it's an album made up entirely of covers from one of the more successful "indie" bands of the past five years. Second, those who know/love Mark Kozelek's work (either from Red House Painters, Solo, or Sun Kil Moon) are usually pretty die-hard. Kozelek notoriously re-interprets other artist's work like no other. Period. His album comprised of AC/DC songs,What's Next To The Moon, stripped each song to it's bare acoustic essence.
Such is the case with Tiny Cities. Taking songs from various Modest Mouse albums, Kozelek tranfigures each tune like an alchemist, molding, sculpting...stripping. With this chosen malleable material in hand he creates somthing altogether different. Below are the first and final tracks on the album out November 1st.

If I Could Only Remember My Name....

Crosby in 1970. This was his finest hour -- his first solo album. Contributing guests include: Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Phil Lesh, Graham Nash, etc etc. If you too enjoy this album, drop me a comment. I think it's fantastic....loose, creative...embodies the early '70s in California perfectly.

James Booker :: Montreux Bootleg 1978

I uploaded this rare 1978 bootleg recording from the Montreux Jazz Festival for a friend yesterday...thought you all may be interested as well. I have several live albums from this New Orleans piano master, and this is by far the best. Booker plays along with a loose pick-up band backing him. Spiders on keys, indeed. Album is zipped in a WinRar file...follow link below.

These folks currently have a split-EP out, with an album in the works. After hearing these two songs, and watching the video on their Website, I cannot wait to check out their 2006 full length. For fans of: Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sufjan Stevens, yada yada yada. It's really good...listen up.

Paste Magazine :: Rock 'n Reel Festival

If you're in Atlanta, Paste Magazine is holding it's first annual Rock 'n Reel independent music and film festival this weekend. Looks like a very solid line-up. Happy to see my hometown step it up.

The Bright Black Morning Light

Brightblack is made up of longtime friends and musical partners Naybob and Raybob -- two Alabama ex-pats now living in the woods of Humboldt County, CA. The duo's indie-americana-folk stylings were taken notice by Will Oldham ,who subsequently recorded two split/EPs, and has toured with brightblack on four occasions. Expect brightblack's first Matador release in 2006. The tracks below are off their 2004 ala.cali.tucky album. Texarkana eat your heart out.

While adding tunes to the Aquarium's radio, I realized I had yet to post anything from Stephen McBean's "other project." So if you enjoyed the Pink Mountaintops tunes last month, Vancouver's Black Mountain is a must listen. (note: you can sample Druganaut on the radio to the right before downloading.)

HAM1 :: Via Athens, GA

As a former Athens resident I try (from the west coast) to keep to keep up with the pulse of the local scene and support new artists. HAM1 is no exception. Under his stage name, local schoolteacher Jim Willingham has recently self-released his first album, but he would rather you have it for free. A novel idea, no? Backed by a crew of esteemed townie musicians (members of OTC, Ballard Lesseman, etc.), Willingham etches himself firmly into Athens' musical lore. Two samples below...visit his Web site for further details.

Commercials :: Co-opting Your Song??

Raise your hand if you have come upon a television commercial in the past five years featuring one of your favorite artist's music. My hand is raised, as is yours. I hate this phenomenon...loathe it. Like the majority of you who stop by here, I have a very personal connection to music and/or songs. It's not just background music -- far from it. It's at the forefront - breathing color, texture, and taste to everyday life. Affairs big and small colored with it. So when a tune from a dearly held album becomes a jingle hawking Hewlett Packard gear (the kinks "picture book") it takes something away from my personal experience. And damn it, I'm selfish about wanting to keep that experience pure, and untainted from commercialism.
Now, say if I was to put on The Moon and Antartica, I would not get very far before being reminded that I need a Nissan SUV of some sort. Throw on a little Allman Brothers on the hi-fi? "Jessica" starts up and I immediately think of three different ads selling different shit. Bill Withers song "Use Me," an undenialibly funky ass soul jam...selling Pringles chips. The list goes on.
So what is it? Well, the other side of the coin is that a lot of the better music I hear, outside of my own collection, comes not from the radio or Mtv, but from...commercials. An argument can be made that your cool-hip-college-advertising-major-roommate went to grad school, got out, and is now calling the shots on creative decisions within an ad agency. They are mining their record collections for content. We're our own worst enemy it seems. And, while I selfishly want to keep these songs all to myself, I imagine it puts a little more money in the often "indie" artist's pockets....or in WEEN's case, they can buy more Scotch Guard. Which might in turn bring back the Boognish.

If you have had some hesitation, as I initially did, check out these two sample tracks below. A great companion piece to the recent Scorcese documentary.

Stop Sniffin' That Smokin' Gun :: Neil Young

The following is a guest post by Neil Young enthusiast Thrasher, of Thrasher's Blog, in which he explores a tune from Young's critically and commercially ignored '80s decade.
--------------------------------------------
Neil Young has always had the touch with a clever turn of a phrase.
When Satisfied '75 asked me to do a guest post on obscure 1980's Neil Young tunes here on An Aquarium Drunkard, it really was an opportunity to explore a considerable -- and overlooked -- chapter in the Neil Young discography.
The selection of "Mideast Vacation" was based more on the lyrics' incredible foreshadowing of world events than on the music itself. Although, Neil's howling feedback crescendos with Crazy Horse to apounding synth backbeat are worth the download bandwidth alone.
This version of "Mideast Vacation" was recorded at Cow Palace in San Francisco, California during the Rusted Out Garage Tour with Crazy Horse on November 21, 1986. The concert was the last stop on the tour and was broadcast as a Pay-Per-View event on cable.
Lots of clever turns of a phrase in the lyrics. My favorite is the lineabout "Stop sniffin' that smokin' gun" in the context of fighting terrorism. Unbelievably, as we all recall, as the U.S. ramped up it's saber rattling in the runup to invading Iraq in 2003, National SecurityAdvisor Condoleezza Rice uttered the famous line regarding weapons of massdestruction that "We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud." In retrospect, it seems as if Condi should've stopped sniffin' that smokin' gun.
In the second verse, if you replace the name of Libyan dictator Muammar Khaddafi with Sadam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden, you have an eerily prescient prediction of events that took place almost 20 years later.
The song would later appear on the 1987 album Life...Here are the lyrics to "MideastVacation" from Human Highway.

Great Lake Swimmers...Oh, Canada

Canada's music scene's been on steroids the past few years, as further exemplified by the sophmore release from Ontario's Great Lake Swimmers. Upon first listen, songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker comes across as a hybrid of an early, pensive Neil Young and My Morning Jacket at their most subdued. Like My Morning Jacket, GLS use organic atmospherics to compliment their moody pallette. [The debut album was recorded in an abandoned grain silo, while the Bodies And Minds sessions took place in a lakeside church in rural southern Ontario.] Subtlety and brevity are the adjectives that come to mind here...eschewing studio tricks/wizardy for acoustic driven songs of loss, loneliness and the recesses of the human heart and mind. Sounds upbeat, no?

Caveat: I really appreciate this genre - sad bastard music/bum-out-slo-core/what-have-you , and recommend to fans of Sun Kil Moon, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Sounds Like Fall, and....Nick Drake. (Nick Drake references in the past 5 years have become both ubiquitous and super-tired, I know.)
