This Album May Be Haunted...

Wow. This past week I bought the Castanets debut album Cathedral and it is outright spooky. I'm not entirely sure if there is a even genre for this yet...Avant-Country? Apparently this was recorded in a secluded cabin in the far reaches of Northern California. It sounds like it too. I would liken this (and recommend) to fans of Will Oldham and the darker sides of Sam Beam and/or My Morning Jacket. Absolutely an album designed for late-night listening. I for one am intrigued.

George Benson: Other Side of Abbey Road

As a rule I am not one for covering The Beatles. 9 out of 10 times it's just a really bad idea -- that's not the case here though. George Benson released "The Other Side of Abbey Road" shortly after The Beatles 1969 release as a tribute completely reinterpreting album. The first MP3 posted here is literally dripping with the funk. Jazzheads will note Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, and Freddie Hubbard are all present as supporting musicians on these tracks.

Greetings From Georgia

Greetings from Georgia, my home state. This is the kickoff post for my ongoing "state's project." Combining my love for old U.S. travel postcards and MP3's, I will be posting native tunes from all 50 states. Sufjan Stevens eat your heart out. Look for old standbys as well as (hopefully) some artists that you haven't been exposed to. Should be a fun ride. Don't forget to buckle up.

**I may have to do a Georgia part II as I'm having to leave off many a band I'd like to include. We'll see. In the meantime, stay tuned for Welcome To North Carolina...

It's a pretty mellow affair over at the radio to the right, but that's the way I'm rollin', playa. New tunes added for your (my) listening pleasure. I may be the only one who listens to this thing anyway. If you like/hate what you're hearing, don't be shy, post a comment. I like recc's too, so feel free to do that as well.

Pet Politics Swedish Style

Last week I received an email from a musician named Magnus Larson hailing from Sweden. He apparently contacted some other folks too. Larson creates under the name Pet Politics, and writes & records out of his bedroom, one-man-band style. If you have some time, check out his Web site...great use of crayon. Good stuff. Kind of a detached Lou Reed thing.

Will Oldham or Palace or Bonnie 'Prince' Billy or...

I have been on a Will Oldham (insert alias here) kick the past few months. He seems to always turn up somewhere when I least expect it -- e.g.: cameo role in the fantastic new film Junebug, soundtrack work on All The Real Girls, etc. With an intimidating back catalog, Oldham continues on his prolific path working on various collaborative albums, most recently with Matt Sweeney. Here are some Oldham tunes lurking on my hard drive for a small taste.

Vic Chestnutt's Brute Influence

While digging through my iPod last week on vacation, my brother put on some Brute which I had neglected for some time. Out of all Vic Chestnutt's catalog the two Brute albums remain my favorite. While a big fan of most of his work, there is something about Widespread Panic acting as his backup band that invigorates his work.

Inspiration flows both ways. Below are solo Vic tracks that WSP have covered on both vinyl and Live.

Hunter S. Thompson: Final Sendoff

In compliance with his wishes, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson will have his remains blasted out of a 150 foot tall monument at his Woody Creek, CO home this Saturday.

"He envisioned it to be a beautiful party. The most amazing people would be there. His friends would celebrate his life. And he was even specific that there would be clinking of ice and whisky." Among those clinking will be Sean Penn and longtime friend Johnny Depp, who helped cover most of the cost for both the party and the monument. The plans for the monument post-party are uncertain, but Anita says there's chance the sculpture, depicting Thompson's gonzo logo of a double-thumbed fist, might be erected elsewhere. (AP)

Steely Dan via Naked Lunch

Last week I re-read (most) of William S. Burroughs' ode to heroin Naked Lunch. It packs just as much or more of a sordid punch as I remember. Mad junkie jibber-jabber. In honor or the book's famed family of dildo's, Steely Dan I, II, and III, I present you two Live Steely Dan tracks recorded May 1974 in Memphis, TN.

FIVE EIGHT

These guys just don't stop. 15 years on and they're still beating the shit out of their audience. A friend in college turned me on to Five Eight, and I have been following their career ever since.
This is their latest album released while supporting R.E.M. on tour last autumn. I imagine their unique brand of post-punk-angry-suicidal-rock went over real well with the wine & cheese crowd. Anyway, you can stream the album on their site HERE...

Richmond Fontaine: Hardcore Troubadours

Richmond Fontaine's latest release, The Fitzgerald, was an album I had ignored far too long. I have now remedied that. An acoustic downtrodden affair, The Fitzgerald spins tales of two-time losers trying to make it through the Reno, NV night, let alone the the day. Fantastic storytelling. If asked to describe the sound I would liken it to Nebraska-era Springsteen, latter-era Steve Earle, and Jay Farrar's acoustic efforts. This album's a grower...give it time.

Who Killed Laura Palmer?

Twin Peaks. Let the weirdness begin. I've been a fan of both the television series and it's offical soundtrack for years. Both have staying power. The Angelo Badalamenti scored OST paints the perfect perverse backdrop for David Lynch's magnum opus. His and Lynch's protege, Julee Cruise, provides the ethereal/haunting vocals on the Twin Peaks theme "Falling." Trivia: David Lynch composed the lyrics.

The Cover: Masters of War

In the spirit of the cover wars, I offer up probably Bob Dylan's most politically charged song, "Masters of War."

Dylan said this about the original in the liner notes of the album for which it appears, Freewheelin': "I've never really written anything like that before. I don't sing songs which hope people will die, but I couldn't help it in this one. The song is a sort of striking out, a reaction to the last straw, a feeling of what can you do?"

In 1993, musicians ranging from Johnny Cash to Johnny Winter showed up at Madison Square Garden to pay their respects to Bobby Dylan. There on a stage with only two chairs and a few mics, Pearl Jam members Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready took on Dylan's anti-war song. Regardless of the outcome of this cover war, it's a shame that the President doesn't have at least one of these downloaded to his iPod.

DOWNLOAD:
MP3: Bob Dylan - Masters of War
MP3: Eddie Vedder/Mike McCready - Masters of War

Side note: The concert also hosted one of the most memorable moments in music when Sinead O'Connor got booed off the stage. After quickly throwing up backstage, O'Connor returned to the sea of boos and sang, acapella, the same Bob Marley song, "War," she performed a few days earlier on SNL. That was right before ripping up a photo of the Pope.

That night at the Dylan event, Kris Kristofferson was one of the few people who publicily stood up for her. His barely audible words, "to not let the bastards get to you," were a highlight of the night. He later wrote a song about her/the night, "Sister Sinead."

Later that night offstage, Dylan came up to O'Connor and said, "you should keep on doing what you're doing." O'Connor responded, "It's no good saying it to me. You should have said that to them (referring the crowd)."

O'Connor's set was left off the official 30th Anniversary release.

This "war" story speaks volumes when you think of it in its totality with the characters Dylan, Vedder, McCready, Kristofferson and O'Connor.

Friends Call Him Al

I' m going to take this opportunity in Satisfied 75's absence to do what music blogs do best: I heard, you should hear.

Alejandro Escovedo is a rock star, legend, artist, songwriter, Austin music scene fixture, and, worst of all, not physically well. I was fortunate enough to visit him, once, at his home in South Austin. Right before I left, I said to him: "Must feel amazing to be named No Depression's first-and-only Artist of the Decade." He said, laughing: "I saw a quote from Jon Dee Graham [former True Believers bandmate/current Austin singer/songwriter] about this. His take was 'Thank God, the decade's over.'" Once-fueding friend Graham appeared with Escovedo on August 6 and 7 at the Edmonton Folk Festival.

My point is this. Alejandro is alive and performing. He's touring. He's underrated and should be seen or bought. This is his most most recent recording with the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra:

And damn, it's tough to hear this line: "There's only one sure thing that waits around the bend."
