The GloNo Beatles "What If" Album

Athens, Ga - Outside In

prepping for my trip back to the deep south got me thinking about my time living in athens, and athens' role in shaping modern music. below are three old-school athenian tunes you should know. Their influence is undeniable.

Housekeeping

FYI, I am going out of town Wednesday-Monday. In my stead will be TripleJ from NotJackKerouac. Coudn't ask for a more tasteful guest-host while I am out. He also mixes the best margarita in Los Angeles. I look forward to seeing what he dishes up for ya'll.

Red Hash, Indeed

Psych-folk beardo, Gary Higgins, is seeing his 1973 album Red Hash gain a new audience due to it's recent re-release. I say bring it on. For a taste, dig on the track below in all it's stoned-out glory.

The Cover: Quicksand

The cover battles continue. In light of Dinosaur Jr.'s temporary reformation, today's selection is David Bowie's "Quicksand" off his 1971 album Hunky Dory. The cover: Dinosaur Jr.'s version off their 1991 ep Whatever's Cool With Me. The boards are open...

Sidenote: When I bought Whatever's Cool With Me in 1992, "Quicksand" was my favorite track. It took about 4 years before I learned it was a cover. My 16 year old self had no idea.

The Many Faces Of Ryan Adams pt. I

Ryan Adams - The man people love to hate, at the ripe age of 30 has amassed a considerable body of work. Constantly re-inventing himself, and his game, despite gibes from critics and fans alike. Some genres he's dabbled in (in one form or another): Country, Confessional Folk-Rock, Punk, Mope-Rock, alt.country, New Wave, Jam-Bandesque improv, Stonesy-Roots-Rock, Bluegrass, Indie Rock, Death Metal, etc. etc. I personally have loved most of these incarnations save a few one-offs. In light of his upcoming release -- the 2nd of the three albums being released in 2005 -- here is a brief taste of the many faces of Ryan Adams off his, and Whiskeytown's, official releases.

Hype?????

Got this album today and will be checking it out on the iPod later this week while on vacation in the North Carolina mountains. I had "Seven Swans" and thought it was decent, but with all the praise being thrown out on this newish release I felt I owed this one a shot. Thoughts? Amazing? Good? Bad? Ugly?? Spill it...

Thurston Moore On Mix-Tape Culture

"Cause Life Ain't Nothing But A Good Groove, A Good Mix Tape To Put You In The Right Mood" - Professor Booty
Making a good mix tape was an art. Mix CDs and iPod playlists just aren't the same, as the mix tape took a certain amount of finesse. Choosing the songs...sequencing the songs. Would each side have it's own theme or vibe? And then there were personalized mixes - songs with a message intended for the listener. Check out Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore's new book profiling mix tape culture (read below for description.)

What Would Lyle Listen To?
Lyle Lovett is one of my favorite songwriters, singers, and showmen. That's a pretty tall order to capture all three in one man.
Check out who Lyle lists among his five favorite songs.
Rickie Lee Jones, "Company": "The melody, the words ... it has that same lamenting quality as Guy Clark's "Let Him Roll." The way they express the feeling of loss is really appealing."
Randy Newman, "Good Ole Boys": "On the songs he wrote having to do with the South, I like the way he points out legitimate social issues in a way that helps you to think about it without pushing you away from it. If you're from the South, it allows you to think about it seriously and smile at the same time."
Van Morrison, "Moondance": "What a great example of a style that's unlike anything else! He has one of those singular voices that just makes any song he sings sound like a Van Morrison song. His vocal style is so strong that it turns anything he does into something he owns."
Townes Van Zandt, anything: "Throw a dart at any Townes Van Zandt song. This word is overused to describe songwriting, but Townes was a poet, a plainspoken poet."
Tom Waits, "Heart Attack and Vine": "That kind of blues, I could listen to over and over and over."

Time Fades Away Pt. II

It's happened. I'm back on a Neil Young kick. This week's discovery of a decent sounding recording of the unreleased "Time Fades Away" album has it's hooks in me. Some interesting factoids/tidbits found on this site...

"There is a chapter in Neil Young's history that is often referred to as his Dark Period. A time when his personal life appeared to gradually disintegrate amidst a series of mishaps and misadventures while critical career decisions seemed irrational and ill thought-out. Yet, paradoxically it has become recognized as one of the most artistically productive and critically, if not commercially, acclaimed periods of his life. A period that spawned a trio of outstanding released albums and a legendary unreleased album."

"MOJO: After the overwhelming success of Harvest, your next new music was Time Fades Away, an abrasive-sounding live album from a 1973 stadium tour that you'd apparently rather forget. Over 20 years later, the memory of that tour and the subsequent record still seems too uncomfortable for you...

YOUNG: "Well, we didn't put any of Time Fades Away on Decade, if that's what you mean."

"Audiences were treated to a show that featured an opening solo acoustic set followed by a rock set from the band. The material was drawn mainly from After the Goldrush and Harvest, along with a smattering of older songs and a batch of new songs. Part way into the tour Young's voice began to give out.

As the strain of the road and the grief of Whitten's death began to catch up to Young, the shows became more and more ragged and raw. A brief break halfway through provided a chance for Young to regroup; it was obvious that if the tour was to continue, something needed to be done. Young called up his friends David Crosby and Graham Nash for help, and they came onboard for the last month of the tour as backup vocalists and rhythm guitarists."

Don't F*CK With The Star Room Boys

After the Bloodkin post i'm on an Athens tangent. The now defunct Star Room Boys were one of my favorite neo-traditional-honky-tonk country outfits until their 2003 demise. In their eight years together they released two fantastic albums: 1999's Why Do Lonely Men & Women Want to Break Each Other's Hearts?, and 2002's This World Just won't Leave You Alone.

This is hard country...nothing "alt" about it. These are old school crying-in-your-beer-because-your-brother-ran-off-with-your-wife-and-truck songs. I was really disappointed when they broke up, because no else is really making this kind of music (this well) anymore. Nashville wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Sidenote: Star Room Boy, Johnny Neff, is one of my all-time favorite lap steel players. Sad and beautiful at the same time. For an example, download "Foolish" below.

...just like something out of tennessee williams

Everyone has a band they root for. An underdog. A band, who despite an enormous amount of talent and perseverance, remain obscure. Life in the minor leagues. The band I root for is Athens, Georgia’s Bloodkin. Practicing what they preach, for better or worse, for the past 15+ years of their creative career.

Some of the most haunted Southern literature never committed to paper.

Bloodkin is: religion, redemption, regret, a bar fight, pride, shame, spanish moss, bourbon, cornbread, a one-night stand, kudzu, driving at night, lust, cocaine, a roadside diner, salty tears, hangovers, the last drag, humidity, hope & salvation.

Being There magazine lists their top "25 Greatest Country Albums of All Time." Criteria include: Rule #1: No repeat artists. Rule #2: No rock or pop acts. Rule #3: No bluegrass or western swing. Rule #4: Folk is in like flint. Rule #5: No Bear Family.

Gram Parsons (pictured above) comes in at #9 on the list.

For a long time I have believed The Grateful Dead to be an incredibly misunderstood band. Too often (90% of the time) their music has been eclipsed by their fanbase, and the tired cliches that come with it. Check out the link below for a vast vault of free Live Grateful Dead recordings. Set aside your pre-conceptions and dig deep into this treasure trove of American music.

Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus

Saw this documentary today in West Hollywood. Alt-country musician, champion of the redneck-underground, Jim White steers us through the deep South connecting the various threads that make this part of America such a potent, fertile, ground for music, literature, and art. Pure Southern Gothic. Picked up the stellar soundtrack in the lobby immediately following the film. Highly reccomended.

"An amazing piece of work. The film essentially follows one man, Jim White, as he deals with both his own, and the South's demons...and in the process we are given a tour of another planet. Beautiful dark and weird stuff."

Jay Farrar - Newsweek Interview

New Order vs. Galaxie 500

Part III of the covers war. Ceremony was the last Joy Division song the band wrote before the death of frontman Ian Curtis. No "dancey" New Order vibes to this one.

Galaxie 500 does a really nice version of the song in their own narcoleptic way.

The Jesus Lizard...be afraid

There are only two camps when it comes to the Jesus Lizard. Those who love them and those who really don't like them. There is no middle ground. Perhaps that is part of the attraction.

I got this album as soon as it came out, and went to see the band shortly afterwards at the Masquerade in Atlanta. My memories are of a wild-eyed, drunken, shirtless, David Yow writhing around stage in black jeans and cowboy boots. Excorcising his demons in front of us. Howling. I went home and immediately sought out the band's back-catalog.

Here are two tracks off the album, Liar, which first introduced me to these animals.

Nick Hornby Talks With The Boss

Author/fanboy Nick Hornby chats with Bruce Springsteen in the UK's Observer newspaper.

But he never had the chance to meet his hero - until The Boss came to London for his recent Royal Albert Hall shows. In this OMM exclusive, the star reveals how he keeps abreast of modern music via his son, and why the likes of 'Born to Run' continue to inspire."

Sugar Smacks Ain't This Sweet

So I just bought this Brendan Benson album in May, but damn if it's not going to make my top 10 of 2005 list come December. Actually, in truth I hadn't heard of this dude at all until I got this. I've since learned that he has some sort of "indie-rawk-detroit-street-cred," but don't hold that against him -- this one's too good to miss. "Power pop" is too overused, so I'll just say it's sweet candy and leave it at that. Two tracks off his new album to download below.

Blow Up & Stroll On

A) If you have not seen the 1966 film "Blow Up" I recommend checking it out. A dash of murder, mystery, and mayhem, all served up amid '60s swinging London.

B) The Yardbirds fill in as the house band in the film. PLEASE download the song below that they perform. It's shit-hot. Actually this is a great opportunity for me to use the adjective incendiary. Yeah, it's on fire.

Strangeways, Here We Come

A musical based on twenty Smiths songs will take centerstage titled "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others."

The New York Times reports:

""Some Girls" seeks the spirit of the Smiths' songs by transforming them. The arrangements are not for rock band, but for string quartet with electronics. Morrissey's heartsick legato croon is reassigned to four women and two men, who deliver anything from keening, primal unaccompanied wails to swing-era harmonies. "

Steve Albini: Post-Punk Foodie

Chicago Indie rock engineer (rock snob/icon) talks about food, music...and musicians who cook food with the Gourmandizer.

"Many rock musicians are excellent cooks, I've found, and those that are prefer to eat their own cooking in the studio. I encourage this behavior as I also enjoy the benefits of fresh food. The best rock music chefs follow,in descending order of excellence: Laura Fuckin' Carter (Jack o Nutz, also Bar b que Killers) is a head chef at a gourmet restaurant in Athens, Georgia. Her best dish is Trout Wellington, which she invented and perfected. It is a whole brook or large rainbow trout baked in a puff pastry and served with light sauces. David Yow (The Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid) who has been a chef at several restaurants in Austin, Texas and Chicago. His best dishes are Whiskey Chicken and Large Number of Vegetables Soup, both of which he invented. "

Hey Rube - Remembering Raoul Duke

For the past 13 years I have steadily tread my way through a good portion of Hunter Thompson's gonzo canon. Presently, I am reading the reissue of The Great Shark Hunt, a collection of "tales" roughly spanning 1965-1975.
Reading this reminded me of Thompson's 2003 collection Kingdom of Fear, highly recommended to both fans of HST as well as those who despise the present administration. Thompson's insights are spot on and his delivery is that of a razor-sharp snarl.
One last plug: Be sure to check out the Hunter Thompson ESPN.com archives. His ongoing column for the sports website were fantastic right up until the end.

Bar Affinity

The bar can be a beautiful place. The Aquarium Drunkard has saddled up to many a bar on many a barstool on many occasions. But there are two watering holes that keep him coming back and will always have a special place in his heart.
  • The Roadhouse - Athens, GA - zod grant me the courage to change the things i can and the fortitude to drink through those things i cannot. so yeah, that was basically my motto/creed in school. the roadhouse abides. this is my all-time favorite bar in one of my all-time favorite towns. no frills, dark, dank, rock 'n roll, no bullshit, all bar. the bartenders (at least in the mid-late '90s) had impeccable taste in music.
  • Boardners - Hollywood, CA - moving to plastic-fantastic land led me to my 2nd favorite bar. same qualities above except not quite as dark, serve food, relatively cheap swill, and equipped with a great jukebox. some of my best nights in l.a. have started and ended here.
